Jyotirmoy Dey

Senior journalist Jyotirmoy Dey, the Investigations Editor of English-language tabloid newspaper Mid-Day, was shot dead, allegedly by four unidentified gunmen, at Powai in north-west Mumbai today, raising fears that the underworld is targeting the fourth estate and sparking outrage among the media fraternity.
Dey, 56, was attacked when he was on his way home. The journalist, who suffered five bullet wounds, was rushed to the Hiranandani Hospital in the area where he succumbed to his injuries.
The motorcycle-borne assailants fled after the crime. The killing occurred outside Spectra building near D'Mart shopping complex at Powai this afternoon.
According to Additional Police Commissioner Vishwas Nagre-Patil, four men on two bikes fired several rounds at Dey, who was also riding a motorcycle, from behind.
Police said there were eight entry and exit wounds on Dey's body.
Dey was covering the underworld and crime for a long time. He wrote many reports on organised crime, including the oil aduleration mafia. He also penned two books on the underworld.
Sources said Dey had not reported any threat to his life.
Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik said, "I was not aware of what he was working on at this time. He was a very good crime reporter. He was a very good resource person."
Mid-Day Editor Sachin Kalbag expressed shock over the killing and said Dey's death was a tremendous lossto the newspaper. He said it was too early to ascertain the motive behind the crime.
NetIndian News Network adds:
In Delhi, the Editors Guild expressed grief over the killing of the journalist and demanded that the state authorities speedily bring his killers to justice.
In a statement here, Guild President T N Ninan and Secretary Coomi Kapoor said initial reports suggested that the crime mafia might have been behind the killing as Dey was a courageous reporter who undertook to expose the underworld.
As editor of the special investigation team of Mid-day newspaper and earlier with the Indian Expressnewspaper, Dey had relentlessly exposed Mumbai’s criminal mafia despite numerous threats to his life, they said.
"The Guild demands that the state authorities speedily bring Dey’s killers to justice. It deplores the law enforcement agencies' inability to protect the life of a journalist engaged in carrying out his professionalduties at great risk to himself," they said.
Journalist organisations in Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and other places condemned the killing.
IUnion Information and Broadcasting Minister condemned the killing of Mr Dey and said the act challenged the freedom of the press and pursuit of objective reporting.
"This incident is a sign of insanity perpetuated by mindless individuals in which innocent citizens are killed. No civilized society can tolerate this kind of attack on the freedom of the press," she said.
Ms Soni said she was confident that Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil would live up to his assurance of tracking down the assailants in the shortest possible time.
