CET Results 2011 Maharashtra

CET Results 2011 Maharashtra
The Maharashtra Health and Technology Common Entrance Test ( MHTCET 2011) this year has thrown up some interesting results, especially in the health science courses, sources in the office of Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) disclosed.

Though there was rise this year in the number of students aspiring for health science courses by 16,053 compared to last year, the number of eligible candidates witnessed a drop of 2.47%. Last year, out of 1.76 lakh candidates, 26,905 cleared the exam which was 15.23%. This year 1.92 lakh took the exam of which only 23,147 passed.

This comes to 12.76%. This year, 1,04,178 aspirants were boys (54.07%) while 88,507 (45.93%) were girls. Over one lakh engineering, 7,000 medical and 9,000 pharmacy seats are to be filled through MHT-CET.

The number is to increase in coming days with many new colleges slated to open. These 23,147 students will fight for 7,000 medical seats. Even the state HSC results witnessed a drop of almost 7% this year.

Out of 3,02,684 total registered candidates, 2,98,897 actually appeared for the exam conducted on May 12 across 786 centres in 35 districts of state. The results would be officially out on Tuesday at 10am and the marksheets would be available to the candidates at their respective junior colleges. Like last year, there will be no merit list to stop unnecessary competition among students.

"We have already dispatched the marksheets to the colleges in sealed packets. We have taken an undertaking from them that they would be not be releasing them to anyone until 4pm, as per instructions from DMER office," liaison officer for MHT-CET for Nagpur division Dr SM Parate told TOI.

Of the three regions in state, only Marathwada has recorded positive results with a marginal rise of 0.02% compared to last year. Rest of Maharashtra and Vidarbha regions witnessed a drop 4.35% and 2.65% respectively in the number of eligible candidates.

Out 41,511 candidates from Vidarbha who took the exam, 5,215 managed to clear it. In 2010, 5,728 had cleared health science courses out of 37,658 students. Interestingly, the number of candidates has increased in all three regions. The admission to health science courses would probably begin in July first week with the filling up of preference forms at four centres in the state.

These are Grant Medical College in Mumbai, BJ medical College in Pune, Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) in Nagpur and Aurangabad. The final merit list is likely to be out on July 25. The engineering admissions would be made by Directorate of Technical Education (DTE).

The process is likely to begin from July 20 while admissions for veterinary science courses would be made by Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University (MAFSU).

This year 45,541 candidates had applied for the biology group (for medical admissions) compared to 1.07 lakh for the mathematics (for engineering admissions) and 1.49 lakh for biology and mathematics combine (students aspiring for both fields).

Interestingly, the number of aspirants for medical seats witnessed a significant jump this year compared to last six years.

MHT CET Result

The Maharashtra Health and Technology Common Entrance Test (MHT-CET) results for the year 2011 will be declared on June 14,  2011. The final merit list will be announced on 25th June 2011. The students can view their results at http://www.dmer.org/vol.htm.
The form filling and the central admission process for medical as well as engineering admissions are likely to start from the last week of June or the 1st Week of July 2011. Tough competition is expected for the admissions of medical seats.
On the contrary, many of the engineering seats are expected to be vacant this year, due to the excessive number of engineering colleges.
Last year more than 22,000 seats had gone vacant. However, many of the engineering colleges are waiting for the AICTE approval for the commencement of the academic session.
More than 7,000 medical seats, 1,00,000 engineering seats and 9,000 pharmacy seats are to be absorbed through the MHT-CET for the year 2011.

Act Test

Not to put pressure on high school students or anything, but the ACT and SAT are, perhaps, one of the most important tests you can take. If you want to go to college, that is.
Although, increasingly, many parents, including Babble’s own Meredith Carroll, say the tests are not an accurate measure of a student’s ability.
For most students, the first step to planning for college is by taking the ACT or SAT standardized test. Scores on this test determine the colleges to which students should apply. Lot of pressure, right? With the test playing that big a role in college admission many parents choose to shell out hundreds of dollars for ACT prep classes to help their children prepare.
But is it worth it?
As Madeleine Behr reports over on Centraltimes.org, while the prep classes can be boring and seem pointless, you can get a lot out of the class you can’t get from a test prep book and they are absolutely worth parents’ money – if students stay awake – which Behr admits half her class did not.
My teacher taught strategies and constantly drilled us with English grammar exercises and math from Algebra 1 and Geometry. Every week, we would get the same assignments, but with different words and numbers, so we really learned how to do the problems. After so much repetition, it’s easy to know what to do. And, more importantly, during the test, you can do those questions quickly instead of stressing out over those, when there are much harder questions on the way.
Did you know some colleges award money when students earn a specific score? I didn’t know this, but then, my ACT taking days are long over. Indiana Universityawards $4,000 per year to students who have an ACT score of a 27 to a 29. Hey! I would have fit into that bracket! They also award $9,000 per year to students who achieve a 30 or higher on the ACT.  I would not have fit into that bracket.
Here’s the thing:  I didn’t study for the ACT. I didn’t even really plan to take it. A friend – whose parents shelled out big money for her prep classes – made me sign up with her. I forgot about the test until the night before.  She spent hours studying.  I scored a 27. She got a 21. She took another prep class and brought her score up a little higher but didn’t come close to tying my score.
The experience made me think that kids are going to know what they’re going to know and while a prep class may help a little bit, if your kid isn’t interested in the class or the test, why pay? If the kid wants to take a prep class and you can afford it, by all means. But in my experience, the prep class didn’t account for much. Jonathan Leong, over at Centraltimes.org would agree. He says the ACT wasn’t meant to be studied for, it’s just a way for schools to measure how much a student knows. “The ACT examines practically all the English, math, reading, science and writing skills that a student may learn over their entire high school career. So with that said, it’s not realistic to try and study everything you’ve learned in that time period. ACT prep classes are a waste of time for students and a waste of money for parents.”
Leong advises parents to save their hard-earned cash for the expensive college tuition and books they will soon be purchasing. Still, Madeline Behr says the classes helped get her score where she wanted it to be.  “Five hundred dollars seems like a lot now, but wait until those $9,000 per year scholarships start rolling in, that’s when you know that an ACT/SAT class was the right thing to do.
What’s been your experience? Are the classes worth the money or a waste of time? Do you think the ACT/SAT were meant to be studied for?

PSEB Result

As another academic year passes, government schools in Mohali have cut a sorry figure yet again as barring one, no other student from any state government-funded school in the entire district managed to get in the top-100 students in Class-XII Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) results, which were declared on Monday.

However, private schools fared comparatively better with two students making it to the merit list with a state-wide ranking of 38 and 142. Gurpreet Singh secured a ranking of 38 is a student of Paragon Senior Secondary School, Sector 71, Mohali and Gurkamal Singh, who ranked 142, is a student of Sant Ishar Singh Senior Secondary School, Sector 70, Mohali.

Speaking to TOI, Gurpreet Singh said, ''I am very happy with the results. My perseverance and hard work have finally paid off. I aspire to be a mechanical engineer and have been taking tuitions to crack Common Entrance Test ( CET).''

His father, Narinderjit Singh, who is a carpenter by profession, said that he was extremely proud of his son. Although, he thought that his son spent all his time behind books and did not get enough physical activity, he was happy that Gurpreet was progressing very well towards his dream of becoming a mechanical engineer.

The only government school student to have made it to the top-100 list is Ramandeep Kaur, a student of Government Girls Senior Secondary School in Kurali, who secured a ranking of 91.

The abject condition of the schools in Mohali district is testament to the fact that no student has made it to the top hundred in the merit list for the last five years.

Most of the government schools in the district lie in a poor state, with the state government more than willing to allot land to private schools, colleges and universities rather than improve the condition of their own schools. Vacancies for the posts of teachers have been lying untouched for the past many years and all that the state government has done on this end is promise the recruitment of more teachers and then completely forget about it.

New College Of The Humanities

New College of the Humanities (NCH) will charge fees of £18,000 a year and offer the ''highest-quality'' education to ''gifted'' undergraduates, according to its creators.
The privately-funded independent seat-of-learning will be based in Bloomsbury, central London, and open in September 2012.
It will initially offer eight undergraduate humanities degrees taught by some of the globe's most prominent intellectuals, college officials said.
Professor AC Grayling, the philosopher who will be the college's first Master, secured millions of pounds of funding from investors to set up the institution which has been likened to America's elite liberal arts colleges.
He said: ''At NCH we believe in the importance of the humanities and excellence in education.
''Our priorities at the College will be excellent teaching quality, excellent ratios of teachers to students, and a strongly supportive and responsive learning environment.
''Our students will be challenged to develop as skilled, informed and reflective thinkers, and will receive an education to match that aspiration.''
The college claims to offer a ''new model of higher education for the humanities in the UK'' and will prepare undergraduates for degrees in Law, Economics and humanities subjects including History, Philosophy and English literature.
Students will also take three ''intellectual skills'' modules in science literacy, logic and critical thinking and applied ethics.
Practical professional skills to prepare them for the world of work including financial literacy, teamwork, presentation and strategy will also be taught.
College chiefs say students will receive a ''best in class education'', with one-to-one tutorials, more than 12 contact hours a week and a 10/1 student to teacher ratio.
Prof Grayling said that budget cuts and dwindling resources are likely to limit both quantity and quality of teaching in the UK, leaving the fabric of society poorer as a result.
He hopes the college - a registered charity - will counteract this.
''Our ambition is to prepare gifted young people for high-level careers and rich and satisfying lives,'' he added.
The 14 professors behind the project include evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins and eminent historian Sir David Cannadine. All will teach.
NCH chairman Charles Watson said: ''Higher education in the UK must evolve if it is to offer the best quality experience for students and safeguard our future economic and intellectual wealth.
''New College offers a different model - one that brings additional, private sector funding into higher education in the humanities when it is most needed, and combines scholarships and tuition fees.''
He added: ''As well as securing the highest-quality education for hundreds of students, we believe an independent university college, established right in the heart of London, will contribute to the long-term economic welfare of the capital, attracting students and professors who are contributing to the local economy as well as equipping our graduates for jobs in the service economy, such as the financial sector, professional services, the media and the creative industries, all of which are such vital contributors to the UK economy.''
Prospective students can apply immediately, with the college offering assisted places to more than 20% of the first year's intake.
